It took 72 minutes for the deadline to be broken, but the Argentine was on hand to give Luis Enrique's men a solid lead as they look to get the job done at Camp Nou in the second leg.

Both sides enjoyed chances throughout the game and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain wasted the first huge one for Arsenal in the 22nd minute when a loose ball fell to him inside the box, but the attacker's effort was straight at Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

Luis Suarez came close to making it 1-0 Barca on the stroke of half time, but he headed narrowly wide from a Dani Alves cross.

Barca started the better of the two sides in the second half, with Neymar losing out on a one-on-one to Petr Cech before the breakthrough finally came when the famous MSN trident combined, ending in Neymar squaring to Messi for the Argentine to smash home the opener.

Luis Suarez found himself in a great position five minutes later when Messi found him inside the box, but the Uruguayan's shot struck the post.

Messi was on hand  to give the Catalan side a comfortable lead, though, when Mathieu Flamini brought him down inside the box, allowing the Ballon d'Or holder to slot home from the penalty spot.
